Abstract:

This paper investigates the intersection of geopolitics and settlement experiences of Chinese queer migrants from mainland China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in Australia. It examines how regional political dynamics—ranging from China’s increasing authoritarianism to Taiwan’s progressive LGBTQ+ policies—shape migration trajectories and influence the lived experiences of queer diasporas.

This paper explores how geopolitical tensions, including Hong Kong’s political upheaval and Taiwan’s growing international recognition, inform migrants’ motivations and expectations. It also highlights the challenges faced during settlement in Australia, including navigating racialized queer spaces, cis-heteronormative immigration systems, and limited access to culturally competent support services. Despite these barriers, queer Chinese diasporas actively forge transnational connections to activism in the Greater China area and contribute to Australia’s multicultural and LGBTQ+ advocacy landscape.

This research situates personal narratives within broader discussions of international relations, migration policy, and Australia’s geopolitical role in the region. By linking the settlement process with global geopolitics, this paper underscores the need for inclusive policies that address the unique challenges faced by queer migrants and promote Australia’s commitment to human rights.
