Abstract:

Recent years have seen an intensification in ‘unruly politics’ around the world, from Myanmar to Georgia, and from Sudan to New Caledonia. Unruly politics, which include transgressive actions from riots to revolutions, are rooted in both domestic concerns (such as corruption and inequality) and international dynamics (from rising inflation to ideas and tactics that cross borders). This roundtable maps the extent and causes of this upsurge in ‘unruly’ movements (Hirst and Lawson), paying particular attention to events in Myanmar (Thame), Bangladesh (D’Costa) and the Pacific (George).
