Biography:
Mutiara Indriani is an Australia Awards PhD scholar and a Research Officer at the School of Regulation and Global Governance (RegNet), The Australian National University (ANU), where she applies an interdisciplinary approach to investigating access to COVID-19 vaccines in Southeast Asia.
Abstract:
This research aims to analyse and compare the availability and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines in Indonesia, Lao PDR, and Thailand during key junctures of the pandemic (2021-2022). The primary objective is to assess the levels of vaccine access, including secured and delivered doses, during the first (January 2021), second (July-August 2021), and third (February 2022) waves of COVID-19 in these countries. The study will explore the types of vaccines procured, the procurement mechanisms used, and the origins of these vaccines. Furthermore, it will investigate the pricing variations among different procurement strategies and examine factors influencing these price discrepancies. The research will also assess the vaccination coverage during each wave and the regulatory approval timelines for vaccines in Indonesia, Thailand, and Lao PDR. Employing a quantitative, descriptive analysis and utilising Tableau for data visualisation, this study aims to provide a detailed understanding of vaccine access dynamics in these countries and contribute to the broader understanding of global vaccine distribution efforts. Key findings will inform future vaccine procurement and distribution strategies in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in pandemic contexts.
